Cramlington Care Home’s touching appeal for cards for the former fire chief’s 109th birthday

One of Britain’s oldest men will celebrate his 109th birthday in Cramlington.

Former firefighter Joe Dixon will celebrate his milestone birthday on Saturday, October 1, surrounded by on-duty firefighters from the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service when they visit him at Scarborough Court care home. As his birthday approached, staff at the nursing home made a touching plea for people to send Joe a birthday card in hopes of presenting him with 109 cards on the day.

Joe was born in Walker in 1913 and became a firefighter, serving with the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service for 50 years. After joining the service in 1937, Joe worked at Pilgrim Street Fire Station in Newcastle where he lived in the quarters with his wife Lydia.

During the Second World War Joe served in RAF Bomber Command and returned to work as a firefighter upon completion. He rose through the ranks to become fire chief before retiring in 1964.

Joe, who is now a great-grandfather, said: “I have always felt very important in my job. The fire and rescue service has always made me feel very important to them.

“A fond memory I have is on my 100th birthday, I had the fire chief and his team visit to mark the celebration and they visited me wherever I lived on every birthday from.”

The Scarborough Court care home is hoping Joe will receive 109 cards to mark the occasion, but said Joe would be delighted to know people are thinking of him, whatever the number.

Scarborough Court activities co-ordinator Stacey Hunter said: “Joe is such a humble and kind-hearted man. It is such a pleasure to have him alive at Scarbrough Court as he always entertains everyone with his inspiring stories.

To send a card to Joe Dixon, please post it to Scarborough Court, Alexandra Way, Cramlington NE23 6ED.
