A man threatened his wife with scissors for food stamps

A Laredo man has been arrested for allegedly threatening to stab his wife in front of their son with a pair of scissors and attempting to punch her after discovering she got a food stamp card.

Oscar Gomez was arrested at his home on July 18. The 43-year-old was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

Gomez was returned to Webb County Jail on $30,000 bond. He was released on Wednesday.

Laredo police received a call Monday about a reported domestic disturbance in the 200 block of River Bank Drive from a child claiming his father was potentially going to assault his mother with a knife.

Officers said they arrived at the residence where the door was opened slightly and screaming could be heard inside. They discovered a man and two women in the residence upon entering and separated them.

The man, Gomez, told officers he discovered an EBT debit card in the mail for food stamps in his wife’s name. He said he made enough money for his family and they didn’t need it.

Officers also observed a hole in the wall, which Gomez said he created by punching it.

Speaking with the women, Gomez’s wife said her husband had sent their son, 15, to pick up the mail, and when he returned he became furious to find the food stamp card. She said he left to go to their office, but returned, which caused an argument.

The woman said she was stuck in the room and he had a pair of scissors with a yellow handle in his hand. Officers said she “watched where Oscar raises his right hand with the scissors and continued to make a forward motion with his right hand toward Maria as if he was going to stab her.”

The woman allegedly told her in Spanish to ‘just do it’ before she could pull away as she tried to call for help on her mobile phone.

Gomez allegedly grabbed the phone before she could as she asked her son to text his older sister home from work, which he did via text.

The older sister reportedly arrived home to find her parents arguing. Gomez later reportedly became even more enraged and punched his wife, but the older sister allegedly pushed her mother away as he slammed into the wall instead. She then called the police about her father.

Officers said Gomez had assaulted his wife in the past, but they never reported any prior incidents.

Upon inspection, officers found a pair of scissors with a yellow handle inside Gomez’s shorts. He denied brandishing the scissors to use against his wife.

Gomez was also in possession of his wife’s phone and the house phone. Officers asked him why he had three phones in his possession, including his own cellphone, and he said, “I don’t know why.” When asked if he normally picks up the phones after an argument with his wife, he said “no”.

Gomez was then placed under arrest and transported to the Laredo Police Department for booking.
